FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Every day in Houston, there are 88,740 children, or 1 out of 4 preschool aged children, who may not know where their next meal is coming from. Harris County has the 2nd highest rate of child food insecurity in the nation, meaning our children have limited or unreliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food.
Kids Meals’ delivers healthy meals to the doorsteps of Houston’s hungriest preschool-aged children. They are a first-responder to children ages five years old and under facing debilitating hunger due to extreme poverty. Every weekday, year-round, from 9 am to noon, volunteers prepare thousands of healthy lunches consisting of a sandwich, nutritious snack and 100% juice or milk. Currently there are 4,500 plus enrolled in the program. Throughout the summer months Kids Meals also provides a healthy lunch to their school aged siblings. So these numbers may increase significantly. Six Kids Meals vans deliver the meals M-F to children enrolled in their program. They currently serve six Houston area routes that target zip codes all located within Beltway 8, where the need is critical.
